![]() ![]() The Mazda Connect infotainment system now has a larger 7-inch screen and an intuitive multifunction control knob on the center console that's easy to reach. The retractable tonneau cover attached to the hatch and lifts out of the way. There is enough legroom in the rear for two adults to sit comfortably. The perforated leather seats are comfortable and well bolstered, especially for a crossover. The lighter color brightened the cabin, which also featured quality materials and soft-touch surfaces. Our CX-5's interior was Parchment and black. The white-on-black gauges in the driver's three-ring instrument panel could use some color and visual flair. Interior: The cabin has been upgraded, but is still rather simple. Our AWD tester got an estimated 30 mpg in highway driving. That quality, combined with precise and responsive steering, make it fun to drive. Peter didn't hesitate to throw it into corners, something he wouldn't do with a lot of SUVs in this class. (The CX-5 is one of few crossovers that you can still get with a manual transmission, but you'll have to settle for the weaker base 2.0-liter engine.) The performance strength of this SUV is in its ride and handling. There is a manual shift option, but no steering-wheel paddles. Still, it's paired with a smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic transmission and there is a sport mode, which holds gears longer, but didn't kick into overdrive in highway driving. Its 2.5 liters put out a peppy 184 horsepower, which is lagging when compared with some of its competitors' turbo options. Performance: This CX-5 came with the larger of the two available Skyactiv-G 4-cylinder engines.
